In the business world, success hinges on precision, innovation, and the ability to navigate complexities with finesse.

Hennie de Klerk, Founder & CEO & rally driver

While it’s common for CEOs to immerse themselves in their work, it’s equally important to explore interests beyond the boardroom. A competitive hobby can be the key to unlocking benefits that not only enrich personal lives but also contribute to enhanced leadership, stress relief, and improved decision-making within the business realm.

  1. Embracing New Challenges:

As founder and CEO of a business in South Africa, the role demands constant innovation and the willingness to test boundaries and engaging in a competitive hobby perfectly aligns with my adventurous spirit. The pursuit of conquering the world’s toughest rally race demonstrates my appetite for pushing limits and finding new and better ways to perform in our field of expertise.

  1. Developing Transferable Skills:

Hennie De Klerk, Dakar 2020Beyond the adrenaline rush, for me, a competitive hobby instils valuable skills that are transferable to the world of business. Endurance, resilience, adaptability, and determination are qualities essential to thrive in both rally racing and running a business within the current challenges we face in South Africa. My participation in Dakar allows me to hone these attributes, creating a powerful ripple effect that permeates our entire business. During the 2020 Dakar, we had some very challenging days and, with mechanical issues at some point, the thought of throwing in the towel crossed my mind. But thinking of the sacrifices my team at TreasuryONE, my racing team and the sacrifice my family made allowed us to soldier on. In thinking of them, we finished as I believe all that you tackle you should finish. As Tom Hanks said, “if it was easy, everybody would do it. It is the hard that makes it great!” This quote is prominent in our office as you enter through the front door.

  1. Relieving Stress and Enhancing Well-being:

Leading a business can be incredibly demanding, leading to stress and burnout if not managed effectively. Engaging in a competitive hobby like the Dakar Rally gives me a much-needed outlet to decompress, recharge, and return to work with renewed focus and energy. By balancing my professional responsibilities with a passionate pursuit, I avoid burnout and maintain a healthier work-life balance, setting an example and encouraging my employees to prioritise well-being in their own lives.

  1. It creates great memories:

The one thing no one can ever take away from you is your memories. As they say, a picture says a thousand words.
